Why Web Protection?
As technology changes, new threats arise. Understanding business risk is the first step in choosing the right security solutions. First, we look at how Sentry Web Protection works. Then we take a look at data breaches and why web protection is so important.
Sentry Web Protection: How it Works
Sentry Web Protection adds a proactive layer of security between a workstation or server and its web browser. As we will see in a second, this mitigates a huge percentage of data breaches.
The “how” is pretty simple to understand, and it works much like definition-based malware protection. When a user clicks on a link, Sentry compares the address to a database before granting or blocking access to the website.
As we have said time and time again, one of the key pillars of our Sentry Business software stack is maximizing threat detection while minimizing threat exposure. Blocking malicious sites has a huge effect on exposure reduction, preventing code from loading in the browser.
But why is that important? Let’s now take a closer look at data breaches.
The Problem: Browser-Based Data Breaches
The bad guys are always after data. Financial records, social security numbers, birth and death certificates– anything you might find for sale on the dark web. Understanding risk is the first step in recognizing a need for mitigation.
Another words, you aren’t going to do anything until you first recognize a problem.
A 2015 report examining breach origin revealed some astounding numbers. 54% of online data breaches involved the use of an internet browser. Let’s examine the study a bit further to see if we can better identify how these threats are succeeding.
Threat #1: Emails Containing Malicious Links
Emails containing malicious attachments led the way, responsible for almost 40% of online data breaches. Running a tight second, emails containing malicious links accounted for 37%.
There is a subtle but important difference between these two threats: email attachments arrive on your workstation via your Inbox. Once clicked, the attachment will infect the system. In the second type, a user must click on a link that takes them to the threat, where infection occurs.
Antivirus software protects workstations against threats that have already found there way onto the device. Sentry AntiVirus protects against malicious email attachments, stopping threats before they execute.
With malicious links, however, no software has breached the system yet- only an email containing a bad link(s). Antivirus can’t help us.
Sentry Web Protection fills this security gap by checking for malicious links and blocking them before they load. If Web Protection fails, Sentry Antivirus is there to stop the file from executing.
Threat #2: Drive-By Downloads
16% of data breaches occur when unwanted, malicious software is unknowingly installed alongside another program. Once again, by running both Sentry AntiVirus and Web Protection, threats must now pass through multiple layers of defense in order to infect your system:
- Layer 1 blocks browser-based threats before they ever load.
- Layer 2 blocks any unauthorized download or file transfer.
- Layer 3 prevents a malicious file from executing.
- Layer 4 removes the malicious software.
Sentry Web Protection: The Takeaway
Whether via drive-by download or malicious email link, web browsers are used in 54% of total data breaches. Sentry Web Protection proactively blocks access to malicious websites, stopping threats before they reach your system.
Together, Sentry Antivirus and Sentry Web Protection provide multiple layers of protection against data breaches.
