This is a good one. Opera has introduced the simplest free VPN for public WiFi we’ve tried to date. No creating an account, no logging in or out, no fumbling with server or setting configurations; just install, turn it on, and go.
Here’s the 411:
What is a VPN?
The most important piece of information to understand about a VPN is that it secures a device’s internet connection to ensure that all data sent and received is encrypted.
Virtual Private Network (VPN) extends a private network across a public network by establishing a virtual point-to-point connection. This secure communication is made possible through the use of dedicated connections, virtual tunneling protocols, or traffic encryption.
Let’s look at some benefits of VPNs, and why using a free VPN for public WiFi should become an essential best-practice.
Why Use a VPN?
A free VPN for public WiFi will secure your internet traffic at a public location. No more worrying whether or not someone is snooping around your business while connected to a public hotspot. Here are some other uses:
- Bypass internet censorship, such as firewalls at work or school
- Access a business network while traveling
- Access a home network while traveling
- Access Geo-blocked websites
- Downloading files
Opera’s Free VPN for Public Wifi
For now, the free VPN for public WiFi feature is only available in Opera’s developer edition. Click here to visit Opera’s developer page to download the file, and follow the default prompts to install it onto your system.
Once you’ve got it going, you need to access the Settings by clicking on Menu in the far upper-left-hand corner. You will see it about 2/3 down the list. Next, select Privacy & security from the left-hand sidebar menu. Now, all that’s left to make your screen look like the image below should be to enable both the ad blocker and VPN by ticking the boxes.
My 2 Cents:
I never had anything bad to say about Opera’s browser in the first place. I also didn’t really have a reason to use it either. These security features alone should make it a must-have for anyone that reads this post. You don’t have to use it all the time. But nothing beats secure. Ever.
Great job by Opera on creating something that literally anyone can use, without even making users create an account. I will doing some follow-up research, but everything I have read has been very positive so far.
